Finding my signature scent: I used to think that is what perfume is all about. It’s appealing to have that one elegant fragrance associated with you and know that every time you catch that beautiful fragrance from your wrist – you know it’s yours.
At first it was easy from my middle school years spritzing Clinique Happy, to upgrading to Angel by Mugler (how great was that celestial-shaped bottle?), and Spring Flower by Creed through college. Then something happened, life became more complicated, and not just in selecting new fragrances. As I was going from department store to department store, my relationship with perfume changed. There wasn’t one fragrance that encapsulated the many parts of me. I became polyamorous.
Playing the field didn’t just smell good, it was great. Rather than committing to one signature scent, I changed to having a few choice favorites and then some. So here we go, here are the choice favorites I have on rotation to match the mood, season, and situation:
1. Creed Spring Flower
Floral, fruity, and flirty: This is one of those perfumes that I first used when I was 16 and I continue to love. It is such a feminine fragrance that I use when I want to soften up my look, it’s a feminine classic.
2. Creed Original Santal
This is not a perfume I would have worn as a girl, but as a woman I love the fiery nature of this robust scent. The sandalwood, cinnamon, and warm vanilla combine to make me feel like I can conquer the world.
3. Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir
This was one of my husband’s signature scents except now it’s mine too. The unique blend of of pomegranate, raspberry, and plum makes it the fragrance I wear the most.
4. Jo Malone Violet and Amber Absolu
Originally I bought this because of its stunning purple and gold colors + the product description, In the Arabian night, an ethereal violet mysteriously blooms…” Aside from its beauty, I knew that anything with amber in it always reminds me of being strong, so I wear this to channel my own inner strength.
5. Killian Playing With The Devil
Some may have heard of Killian because of Rihanna (not me). I first found it though my husband. This is my scent at night – of course, because that is when the devil plays. “Tart blood orange essence and rose-tinged lychee fruit is set ablaze with peppery pimento berries essence.” When I want to be memorable, this is it.
6. Serge Lutens Nuit de Cellophane
With bursts of jasmine laced with mandarin orange, I can’t help but douse myself in this. It’s pleasant scent makes me happy and I hope it makes others who catch its scent happy too.
7. Jo Malone Peony Suede
This fragrance is a delight to the senses. It has notes of jasmine, rose, and gillyflower that mixes with blush suede. It’s both soft yet packs a opulent punch. I never let myself run out of this.
8. Mimosa & Cardamom Cologne
By now you know, I love Jo Malone. This is the fragrance that most people love – and I’ve given it as a gift more times than I can count. It’s a warm cardamom scent with notes of vanilla, almond, and aromatic tobacco. You can also stack this with other Jo Malone scents.
9. Jo Malone Amber Lavender
Described as perfect male refinery – I love it as a female. It’s elegant and refined. I’m never afraid to wear traditional male scents because florals and fruits just don’t always capture my essence. Strength, power, and traditional male traits are on some days, exactly what I want to exude, starting with my fragrance.
