There are many reasons a family might take a staycation. One might be affordability. Another — and this is major — is convenience. The most difficult part of traveling with children is the flight, or the time on the road. Take a staycation at a local resort, and you immediately eliminate those headaches.
We know that being close to home (but feeling a world away) is important for maximum relaxation. That is why having a few staycations up your sleeve is imperative to recharging your mental health and overall energy. So we are here to tell you to kick schedules out the window, be spontaneous, and book a last-minute getaway that’s just around the corner. Your kids and partner will thank you.
The Shores Resort & Spa has long been one of Daytona Beach’s top family-friendly destinations, and the location’s recent multi-million renovation offers more for the family than ever before. With AAA Four-Diamond hospitality, the Shores is the kind of hotel you never have to leave. Here are our top 10 reasons why you should check out of reality and check into a staycation at the Shores.
1. Direct Beach Access
If your kids are anything like ours, they never miss an opportunity to run on the beach. The resort is situated along 23 miles of unobstructed beach on the Central Florida coastline, and there is a private staircase on the pool deck, allowing the kids to go back and forth all day.
DBM Pro Tip: There is driving on the beach, as this is what made Daytona Beach originally famous. If you want to take the kiddos to the beach worry free aim for less busy times when limited cars will be on the beach.
2. Luxurious Poolside Cabanas
What a luxury it was having a poolside cabana accommodation with a dedicated server. Whatever our kids wanted to eat or drink, it was available. Although this luxury wasn’t entirely necessary – since we had a private cabana just steps away connected to our rooms – we typically are not known to be practical. And besides, we would be remiss not to take advantage of hanging out in our own swanky striped and tasseled oasis with someone helping us feed our children. We loved the ease of grabbing ice cream poolside at the Tiki Hut Barefoot Beach Bar, and enjoying a sunrise breakfast in our own private beach cabana.
3. Gifts for Kids
When the kids get something at check-in, not only does it give them something to occupy themselves with and enhances the vacation, it also makes them feel welcome and it gives them a connection to the hotel. Our kids were not only greeted with Shores Beach Balls and S’Mores kits at Check in. (More on Beach Balls and S’mores below)
4. Pool and Kiddie Pool
The numerous pools allow for multiple experiences – even for the littlest swimmers. Kids can swim year-round thanks to the heated pool, but our kids had a blast splashing around in the kiddie pool. The resort offers an assortment of deck games and activities, in addition to a sandpit for the kids to play in right near the pool.
5. S’mores and Fire Pits
After dinner, the kids couldn’t wait to dig into their complementary Shores S’more Kit we received when we checked-in. We all got cozy around the Beachfront Fire Pits and the kids had their first go at roasting s’mores. Our husbands loved lounging on Adirondack chairs, and we loved eating toasted marshmallow while listening to the lively music and watching the kids dance after indulging in their sweet treats.
6. 24-hour Room Service
Azure Oceanfront American Kitchen offers room service at any hour of the day or night.
7. Playground Access
Just a short walk along the beach will take you to Frank Rendon Park. This popular beachside park has a children’s playground with padded floor, disability-accessible restrooms, water fountains, and outdoor showers.
8. Fine Dining
The food here is a real standout. Anchored by Executive Chef Steven Bernstein, Azure Oceanfront American Kitchen made the staycation so special. Our beautiful and intimate sunset dinner was out on the terrace, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and pool deck.
When our kids were seated, they were given a creatively folded menu surrounding crayons, If having a children’s menu wasn’t helpful enough, the Shores printed their menus on coloring pages with drawing games, providing our kids with amusement as they waited for their delicious meals.
And speaking of delicious… We ordered the Brick Pressed ½ Chicken and Florida Black Grouper – and they were both so fresh, flavorful and fabulous. Our husbands ordered the Floridean Seafood Paella and Lobster Mac and Cheese, and they were very happy with their meals. Good food and good company is the perfect recipe for an unforgettable night.
9. The Rooms
The rooms we stayed in were not just spacious, but an ideal layout for families. With pool access from the terrace, and sliding glass doors that lead to private cabanas – with couches and a TV – these rooms were an upgraded version of our home away from home. The kids were thrilled to wake up to views of the ocean while hearing the waves.
10. The Marketplace
Packing in a hurry (or like us, distracted) and left something at home? The Shores Marketplace & Gift Shop carries the essentials like Starbucks Coffee, toothpaste, sunscreen. The Marketplace opens at 6:00 a.m. which comes in handy if your kid is hungry and cannot wait for breakfast to be served.
Here are some additional things to know:
1. Rooms have refrigerators
Our little ones are beyond the stage of traveling with milk, but having a refrigerator in the room to store snacks makes the time in between meal times much easier.
2. The hotel is pet-friendly
The Shores welcomes you to travel with ALL members of the family! Cats and dogs are welcome in select pet-friendly rooms.
