Grandparents are simply the best. They are the best support system, best friends, and role models for our children. What would we do without them? Most likely if you have grandparents nearby or far, they need a car seat to transport your little one safely around town. So whether the grandparents transport your little ones daily or not often; they need to know how to keep your child safe in a car seat. Even the safest car seat on the market is rendered useless if used incorrectly. Here are the common mistakes grandparents make with car seats.

The Best Convertible Seat For Grandparents

Some car seats are just too difficult to figure out how to use. So the number one priority in selecting a car seat for our grandparents was to make sure it was an easy-to-use car seat. From installation to adjusting as needed, the Chicco NextFit Zip Max is the safest and easiest to use aka grandparent-friendly car seat on the market. The Chicco NextFit is a convertible car seat that can be used for babies and toddlers, from 4 to 50 pounds. It’s great quality, sturdy and safe design, made it the number one choice for our family.

Easy Correct Installation

This is so important for grandparents. Although there have been many innovations in car seats, the latch system can still be quite difficult to install. A grandparent may not be able to exert the strength required to securely install a car seat. But this problem is eliminated with the Chicco NextFit Max, the SuperCinch Tightener system allows both grandparents and parents to easily exert the strength needed for a secure installation. This makes it a cinch for grandparents to install the seat correctly with much less effort.

Harness Height

It is a common mistake for everyone, including grandparents, to position the harness straps incorrectly. The chest clip should be level with the arm pit, which allows for the chest clip to rest across the strongest part of the child’s chest.

Secure The Straps

The straps should be fitted and snug, not too tight and not loose. No twists. You should not be able to pinch extra fabric at the shoulders. An easy trick is to loosen the straps, then secure the straps after the child is seated in the car seat.

Forgetting The Tether

Don’t forget the tether strap! Many people forget to use the tether. The tether is a strap on the car seat that connects the car seat to the vehicle. Typical tether anchor locations are the behind the seat, floor, rear shelf and roof, but you may have to check your vehicle owner’s manual for exact locations of the vehicle tether anchor. If your child is forward facing, make sure the tether is used.

Adjust Frequently

One common mistake grandparents make is they don’t adjust! It is not enough for you to show the grandparent how to use the seat and adjust the seat one time. Kids grow at rapid rates, and the car seat needs to be adjusted as your child grows. The Chicco NextFit is easy to adjust as needed, including special features that make it easy to adjust such as the 9 position head-rest, straps, and no-rethread harness.

Expiration Check

Car seats do expire. So in particular when seats are being passed down among siblings, it is important to make sure the car seat is not expired because they become unsafe. The Chicco NextFit Max has a lifespan of 8 years, so it is sure to last your family for a very long time.

Rushing The Next Milestone

Don’t turn around your child early. It’s a wonderful milestone when your child can ride forward facing, but it is not one that should be rushed because it compromises safety. So when should you switch? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently updated their recommendations. The AAP  broke down the guidelines by age group and recommends infants and toddlers ride rear-facing until they are at least two years old or until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car seat manufacturer.

Stay Rear Facing

Children should be kept rear facing for as long as possible. This particular model accommodates children in rear facing mode up to 50 pounds and offers children 25% more legroom in rear facing mode, so children can remain rear facing for as long as possible. Furthermore, when your child is ready, this seat couldn’t make the transition easier. With its bubble levelers, belt path, latch, and 9 position recline adjuster.

Ask For Help

If something doesn’t feel right – maybe it isn’t. Encourage the grandparent to ask for help. Locally, Safe Kids offers a free safety car seat safety check every 1st Wednesday of every month. For more information on free safety car seat checks, click here.

Both parents and grandparents agree, there is no cargo more precious than your child. The Chicco NextFit is a great investment and ideal car seat for the grandparent in your life.
